Remember how I said this past weekend was a busy one? Well aside from visiting Iowa for a press trip, I also attended Kitchen Table’s Fall Sunday Supper. It was an amazing event and one I couldn’t wait to share with you guys.
For those of you who aren’t from Omaha or who don’t know about Kitchen Table it is one of Omaha’s best restaurants. It is owned and operated by Colin and Jessica Duggan who are from Omaha but spent a lot of time in San Francisco. Upon returning home they wanted to open a restaurant that focused on local, seasonal menu offerings, that catered to both meat-eaters and vegans and vegetarians alike.
When Colin described the creation of Kitchen Table to Omaha Magazine he said, “We wanted to embrace the trend of local, organic products but in a more casual and all-accessible setting.” I personally think they have done a phenomenal job bringing their concept to fruition. They have an incredible menu that changes seasonally as well as daily meat and vegetarian specials. Josh and I are big fans. I was beyond flattered and very excited when they invited us to attend their latest Sunday Supper event.
This vegetarian Fall Sunday Supper was a partnership between Kitchen Table, Squeaky Green Organics, and Zipline Brewing Co.. Squeaky Green Organics is a family-owned organic produce farm that serves restaurants in the Omaha area. Zipline is a craftbeer brewery out of Lincoln, Nebraska that wins awards for its brews all over the country. At the Fall Sunday Supper we were able to hear about their products, the ideas behind the dishes, and why they love to do what they do.
As I am not a beer fan I stuck with Crown Valley Brewing Cider for the night. It was delicious. (And Josh loved the Zipline beers enough for the both of us. 😉 He’s a huge fan.)
The tasting started out with dolmas made with collards, freekeh, shallots, spanish tarragon, and black garlic. This dish reminded me that I really need to cook with freekeh more often. It’s delicious!
The second course was garden caviar. It was a mix of tomato, jimmy nardello pepper, eggplant, calabrese broccoli, and beluga lentil. It was absolutely incredible and my favorite dish of the night. I loved all the different flavors and textures and only wish I had more to enjoy!
Our next course was a green gazpacho. It was so refreshing and the perfect little palate cleanser.
Our main course was all themed around green tomatoes. There was an arugula salad with green cheery tomato croutons and grilled green beefsteak tomatoes with a peppercorn crust and socca frites with green ginger ketchup. Arugula salads are one of my favorite things so I devoured it before moving on to the rest of the dish. I love a good beefsteak tomato and could not get enough of the green ginger ketchup! It was so good!
Dessert was a treat! I have never had such an usual dessert dish but I loved it so much. Colin and Jessica are not a huge fan of sweet dishes so they prepared a more savory dessert. This dish was candied tomato shortcake, with jimmy nardello pepper curd, and ginger whipped cream. It had just enough sweetness and so much flavor.
For a more traditional dessert we were surprised with mini macarons. As these were an off-menu surprise I can’t reference the menu to tell you what was in them but they were all so unique and bursting with flavor. The macaron shells were made without egg which was such a cool thing to get to try . I do remember the macaron on the right was parsley flavored! My favorite was the one in the middle. I hope Kitchen Table offers these again because they were delicious!
It was an incredible night with amazing food that Josh and I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend checking out Kitchen Table the next time you’re looking to treat your tastebuds!
