When Josh and I were first invited to spend a weekend in St. Louis, we weren’t really sure what we’d be doing there. I had previously visited the city few times for work with my old job, but I’d never been introduced to all the fun things there are to do and see in St. Louis. After spending this past weekend in St. Louis I fell in love with the city and can’t wait to go back. There is so much to do it’s crazy!
One of the coolest surprises was The City Museum. A true city treasure, The City Museum is a former shoe factory that was converted into a building-wide jungle gym for adults and kids alike. Nothing is off-limits. You can climb the walls, tunnel down into caves, jungle-gym across the ceiling. There’s even a 10 story slide!
Admission is only $12 ($17 if you want to explore the roof), and you are in for a full day of fun.
As we discovered more and more of this place we found ourselves struggling to think of how we’d describe it to friends and family. It was so cool it was almost unreal. It’s definitely all my childhood dreams come to life.
We started off climbing up into the ceiling to explore the play place like maze of tubes. The crazy thing is that there’s no set path to take. If you choose right instead of left, you will likely never come back to that option. This place is sprawling and is definitely somewhere you can visit over and over again without feeling like you’ve seen and done it all.
Josh found a fun way to traverse the ceiling.
Our play place tubes eventually took us to this aquatic themed area. We got here by climbing out from under that shell seat. This place is a real workout!
Mermaid goals.
Next we found ourselves exploring cave-like mazes. It reminded me of the spelunking we did in Mexico. I didn’t take a lot of pictures during this part because it was so dark and sometimes cramped. Josh enjoyed this part the most.
Next up we found a spiraling maze to climb to get to the 10 story slide. We were both up for the challenge.
It seemed endless but was so worth it. I’ve never gone down a 10 story slide before but can confidently say the next time I do it will not be in a skirt. 😉
Said skirt. People told us The City Museum was cool and interactive but we truly thought we were in for a typical museum experience. This was anything but! I highly recommend wearing some more athletic, comfortable clothes than I did.
Josh and I always say we’re just big kids at heart. It was so fun celebrating three years of marriage with this guy in a way that was truly perfect for us.
After exploring some un-photographed but awesome mirror hallways and spinning barrels, I found my favorite part of the whole museum. These topsy-turvy chairs are the absolute coolest. I spun on this thing for a good 20 minutes. (Here I am in action.) I loved it so much I wanted to see about buying one but Josh raised the valid question of how we’d check one on the plane. Next time!
Next we found ourselves in a really fun art museum. I couldn’t decided if this whale was playing with the person or eating him. He just seems so happy for the pose he’s in!
I had to check this exhibit to see if the mirrors were made out of old CDs. They weren’t.
We ended our day at The City Museum with a circus performance! We were walking by this part of the building and saw a crowd forming so we decided to see what was going on. It was so much fun and the kids were so talented! I love how there’s something for everyone and that you never know what you’ll find on your adventure. I can’t wait to go back! If you find yourself with an opportunity to visit The City Museum, jump on it! Josh and I kept saying it was one of the coolest things we’ve ever done.
