When I was a kid I didn’t really get getting older. I knew it meant birthdays, cake, presents, and lots of special attention. But I didn’t understand that it meant the adults in my life were getting older, too.
I thought my grandma would live forever. I don’t think anyone had a stronger personality than her. I felt like she could will a mountain to move and it would.
She was a huge part of my life story, and is in many of my memories. Throughout her life she showed me nothing but unconditional love.
My grandma was so proud to be Irish. She was so proud that I was Irish. She never wanted me to forget my roots or where I come from. I didn’t really get it at the time. Now that she’s gone I wish I could have more conversations with her about her memories and our ancestors and their stories.
A few months ago I wrote a post sponsored by Nestlé about words of wisdom from my mom. Today I wanted to share wisdom I learned from my grandmother. Every time I see or hear something Irish I think of her. Every picture I see of me playing the violin or Irish Dancing I say a little thank you to her for encouraging me to discover my roots. I’m so proud to be Irish. This is a particularly beautiful Irish proverb that I love:
Thanks Grandma, I love you. <3

My grandma passed away almost three years ago and I miss her every single day. I feel like we were a lot alike and I learned a lot from here. The biggest thing I learned is the importance to be strong – she was such a strong woman and I feel like she has been a role model for so many different parts of my life where things have gotten tough.

I’m so glad you got to have such an amazing relationship with her! 🙂

What a lovely post! Unfortunately, I only have one living grandparent now, my mom’s dad. It’s not really advice, but my mom’s mom, my grandma who passed away a few years ago, was one tough cookie. I hope I turn out to be half as tough as her. 🙂

Having strong women in a girl’s life growing up is such a blessing.

This is so beautiful, Erin! Just as your mother would be, your grandma would be so proud of the woman you have become today and that you continue to grow to be!

Something my grandma has taught me not by words but actions was to be generous, giving and care for those around you. She’s one of the kindest persons I know and I admire her for this.
I’m sure your grandma would be happy knowing how much her words mean to you.
Erin says
Actions speak so much louder than words. Your grandma sounds wonderful!
