So I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the serendipity of life. I have been feeling so blessed lately, and like so much of my life has been beautifully falling into place. From graduating college to getting married to moving to Omaha to finding a job to making new friends everything just feels so right. I’m definitely counting my blessings, but I’ve also realized that everything good that has happened to me has had two underlying components: my personal drive to get them and the use of technology.
After I graduated I was SO nervous about finding a job. Everyone prepared me that the job market is horrible and graduates are spending months and months unemployed. I knew that part of my successful integration into Omaha involved me getting into a daily routine. I knew the biggest thing I could do to help get into a pattern would be to get a job. I didn’t just want to find any old job, I wanted to find and start my career. So I posted my resume on job boards and downloaded the LinkedIn app. As luck would have it, all the things I do for fun using social media and on this blog are what made me stand out from other candidates and a perfect fit for my new job. Technology helped me find a job.
Once I got a job I really wanted to work on creating a social network here. Josh and I moved here with no close friends or family nearby. I knew I wanted people to go out and have fun with, and also build relationships for when times are tough and I need advice or a shoulder to lean on. Through my blog, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram I had so many people reaching out to me offering to hang out. Every meet-up went so effortlessly that I decided to introduce everyone to each other and the Omaha Blogger Group was born. I started a FB group for us and we plan on doing monthly meet-ups that are coordinated all via online chatting. Looking over at my calendar and seeing it filled with social events makes me so happy. It’s amazing how easily technology can connect people these days. I have zero friends here that were not first connections via social media. Technology helped me make friends.
Definitely the biggest contributor to my bliss is this guy. Plain and simple, he’s my soulmate. As I look around at the life we’re building together I can’t get over the fact that we very easily could have never met. If we both hadn’t gotten the crazy idea to make OkCupid profiles and if I hadn’t gotten up the nerve to email a guy six years older than me and a hour and a half away from me I wouldn’t be living in Omaha right now. I wouldn’t have the job I have. I wouldn’t have made the friends I have. What if we had lived before online dating sites or blogs or social media existed? Technology introduced me to the man I was supposed to marry. Technology helped shape the course of my life’s history. I am so thankful technology exists. I am so thankful I was always determined to accomplish my dreams. It feels so amazing to get to be living them.
Questions of the Day: How has technology enhanced your life and connected you with others? What blessings are you most grateful for?

When I moved to NYC I didn’t know anyone and had no family here… it sucked. My coworker showed me cliqie.com and I’m a big fan of that over the others in terms of actually meeting people vs. just entertainment. It has a different approach that feels less sketchy cause you and your friends essentially act as “wingmen”. I like that it helps you find things to do too. Skout’s okay too, but still has it’s fair share of creepers

It’s hard to meet new people! I’m glad you found a way that worked for you!

Because of technology I have better connections with my friends that live in other states than I do with ones that live closer (sad I know).
Great post. Well written!

I’ve been so fortunate to stay in touch with friends that live so far away because of technology. It’s amazing.

Erin – Great post! And so glad that you got all of us together to meet.
Technology has been a tough road for me because I was born before a lot of it, but I am still thankful for it. It keeps me connected to my college friends, it gives me an outlet for my blogging and writing, and if you want to talk “old skool” technology – I’d be lost without my indoor plumbing aka a real toilet! lol. 🙂

I’m so glad everyone was willing to meet. I love our Omaha bloggers group!
