Hey all! Between my Aunt visiting this weekend and blogging about my first Foodie Penpals experience I never got to blog about my geology trip last Thursday. I love my geology class, we already went on a really cool field trip this semester. For our final trip we visited Penns Cave.
Despite being born in Pennsylvania I had never heard of Penns Cave until moving to Central PA. Josh and his family have visited and raved about it so I was really excited when I found out my class would be going on a fieldtrip there. Growing up in Eastern PA I visited the coal mines in Scranton when I was in school and really enjoyed the experience. Its so cool getting to visit the special places in your local area.
I had never been in a cave before and started getting really excited/ a little nervous when I saw the entrance to the cave. In my head I was imagining this little cave we would duck into for a few minutes and the come back out. This looked freaking huge!
It was so cool being in a boat driving through the underground tunnels. I felt like an explorer from back in the day. Apparently Penns Cave has been giving tours since the 1800’s! I took some pictures of the cool structures I saw.
A bat! I’m not a big fan of bats but it was cool to see one resting on the ceiling of the cave hibernating. The tour guide told us most of the bats woke up early this year and left the cave because of the unseasonably warm weather but this little guy was still sleepy.
At the end of the cave there was a tunnel leading back to the outside world.
We ended up on a gorgeous lake with views overlooking Penns Cave’s zoo. In the spring and summer they offer tours of the zoo. I would love to come back and do that. After making a circle in the boat we headed back into the cave to head back to the entrance.
There were so many beautiful and interesting looking formations in the cave. Our tour guide was so well informed and had so many stories and so much knowledge to share. He said he always likes to take a little longer to explain the cave to geology students. 😀
I couldn’t get over the beauty in the cave.
I would love to get out and explore it by foot.
At one point in the tour our tour guide turned out the lights and had us sit silently and listen. The only noise you could hear in the entire cave was the dripping water. It was beautiful.
Before we knew it an hour had passed and we were back at the entrance of the cave. We made a quick stop at the giftstore before we left.
I loved the cute displays. I could totally see myself visiting as a kid and wanting everything in sight. It was such a fun trip and such a cool experience. If you’re ever in the area I definitely recommend checking it out!
Question of the Day: What makes your area unique? Do you have cool caves, coal mines, huge forests, or giant canyons?
