Making Pretzels at Whole Foods

September 2, 2013 12 Comments

Happy Labor Day! I hope you are having an amazing long weekend with loved ones.

This past Friday Josh and I did something we always wanted to do:

we took a cooking class! When Whole Foods invited me to attend their Pretzel Making at Home Cooking Class I knew this would be a perfect class for me and Josh. The class was taught by Andrea Slonecker, author of Pretzel Making at Home. The class was packed!

We learned the basics of pretzel shaping and each got two pieces of dough to practice with and turn into our own pretzels.

We had so much fun. Sidenote: I love seeing pictures of Josh with a wedding band on his finger. It makes my heart smile. 😀

Here are our dough creations. The blob on the left isn’t just a blob but in fact a pretzel roll. They’re totally different things. ;p

While the pretzels baked we drank! And learned about the history of pretzels. Did you know the shape of pretzels represents the way people used to fold their arms to pray? And that pretzels were an accidental discovery? The guy who made them accidentally dipped bread in cleaning solution before baking. He liked the way they looked and tasted so he started selling them. The lye that makes them taste like pretzels, while not good for us in its original state, becomes completely safe during the baking process. It makes me wish I paid more attention in Chemistry class.

At long last the pretzels were ready. The room smelled amazing. The class made a whole assortment of pretzels, including pigs in a blanket. We skipped those but stocked up on plenty of others.

My roll turned out pretty fabulous if I do say so myself.

I felt like such a chef. This definitely made me want to make pretzels at home. As good as they looked they tasted a million times better. It was such a fun date night. To see what cool events might be happening at your Whole Foods check out their events calendar.

Question of the Day: Have you taken a cooking class before? What was the class about?

That looks like tons of fun! I would never think of making pretzels at home. Last summer I went to a raw food class. It was amazing!

That seems like it would be so much fun! I will have to check our local Whole Foods calendar and see what types of events they have going on. I know John and I would really enjoy doing something like that. Such a good change from the standard “dinner and a movie” date. …And btw, your pretzel looks delicious!
