This past weekend I was excited to get to treat Josh to some delicious food. We share a serious love of food but out of the two of us Josh is the better cook. I do great when I have a recipe in front of me but Josh can think up recipes in his head and play with spices in a way I can’t even imagine. That means I’m usually treated to dinners a lot more than he is. I was especially excited to make this dinner for him not only so I could reciprocate some of the wonderful thoughtfulness he showers on me, but also so I could try my hand at making a tasty, healthy meal for us that goes from prep to plate in less than a half an hour.
Oh yes, the wonders of frozen foods. Frozen meals usually carry a negative stigma, and a lot of times I think it’s warranted. If I’m going to be consuming half of my daily sodium in a meal, I at least want it to taste good! (It usually doesn’t.) I think when people hear the word frozen they automatically think of the bad frozen foods out there, but there are a lot of good ones too. My freezer is filled with bags of frozen veggies, frozen fruits (perfect for winter smoothies!), and Diane’s homemade spaghetti sauce that she makes in big batches and freezes for eggplant parm nights. They’re all healthy and super convenient. I have been hearing good things about Schwan’s for a while now, so when I was offered the opportunity to try some of their frozen food products through FitFluential, I was very excited. Here is what I picked to try:
Tri-Color Tortellini Salad Kit
Chocolate Chip Frozen Cookie Dough
Schwan’s is known for their incredible delivery food service. From the comfort of your own home you can order food and have it delivered to your doorstep by an incredibly kind delivery man (at least mine was!). What I think they should be known for even more is their Live Smart line. Schwan’s has made a pledge to make foods with minimal additives, lower amounts of sodium, and no trans fat. Hopefully one day that will be a baseline for all food companies. Everything I ordered was from the Live Smart line and had super high reviews (I love being able to read opinions before I buy). Due to Schwan’s offering seasonal items, I did have to switch my dessert choice because of limited availability. I had originally ordered the Live Smart Blueberry Cobbler and thought it would be delicious topped with their cherry frozen yogurt. The delivery man was so nice as he explained the situation and let me know I could pick any other item I’d like to replace it with. I had dessert on my brain and decided to go with their chocolate chip cookie dough. It’s not a Live Smart item but sometimes a girl just wants a cookie! 😀
Something I immediately noticed and loved with Schwan’s products is the resealable bags. It is a huge pet peeve of mine when I buy big bags of frozen goods and then they don’t have a resealable top. As much as I love food I can’t eat for nine people.
While Josh was busy working I got down to business cooking. Everything worked out so well timing wise. I preheated the oven for the sweet potatoes while I boiled water for the tortellini. Once everything was prepped it all cooked for fifteen minutes. All the food comes with microwave instructions but when it’s that easy to make, why not take an extra ten minutes and make the food the right way so you can really enjoy it.
A close-up of my dinner plate of deliciousness. As the food cooked Josh kept remarking how good everything smelled. Once we sat down to eat we both couldn’t stop raving about how good everything tasted. This is seriously good food. The vegetable blend is flavored so well and the tortellini is cheesy and yummy without being heavy or oily. I could eat sweet potatoes for days, which is exactly what I have been doing with how big the bag is. Josh has already told me we need to order some more of the Mediterranean vegetable blend to have in the house.
I fell in love with this tortellini salad. I saw the cooking instructions said it can be prepared for a cold salad as well as hot, so I decided to take some of the leftovers and refrigerate them. I had a delicious snack the next day that had even more flavor after sitting over night.
I love cookies. All cookies are pretty delicious but soft and chewy ones with lots of chocolate chips are my absolute favorite. The box I ordered contains a lot of cookies. To try and be good I only made a handful at once so I could try and practice some self-control.
I loved how these cookies didn’t have the generic taste of a lot of bake and break cookies. They looked and tasted homemade. They were so good they were gone within two days. When I asked Josh what he thought of them he responded with, “Well I loved the one cookie I had before they were all gone.” We must have been cookie-napped…
We enjoyed a lot of delicious desserts this past weekend. What frozen yogurt lacks in taste compared to full-fledged ice cream, it more than makes up for in lack of guilt. Eating ice cream sometimes comes with regret, but I never feel that way after digging into some froyo. This frozen yogurt far and away exceeded my expectations. I completely agree with the reviews on the site when I say it actually tastes like real ice cream. The cherry is flavorful without being artificial tasting and the yogurt has a nice creaminess to it. I will be enjoying this stuff for a long, long time!
If these foods sound deliciously tempting to you, you’re in luck! Schwan’s was so sweet to offer a coupon code worth $5 off a purchase of $25 or $10 off a $50 order. Simply enter the code KIMH2 at checkout. I’d love to hear what you get!
Question of the Day: Have you ordered from Schwan’s? What are your favorite items or foods you’d most like to try from their menu?

I am kind of excited to see healthy options coming from the Schwann man! We used to have him deliver to the house when we were kids, but it wasn’t necessarily the stuff that was the best for us.

yummy all of that looks delicious! I love resealable bags too!
Erin says
Resealable bags are amazing. If you have under a family of four you’ll definitely be having leftovers you’ll want to keep sealed for dinner another night.
Sami says
That’s awesome! I love how convenient frozen meals are… in fact, when I know I have to get to class at night after work, but I don’t want to neglect my husband, I always pop something frozen in the microwave for him to eat when he gets home. I’d love to try Schwan’s! I always see their delivery truck at one of our neighbor’s houses!
xo.
Erin says
Aww what a good wife! I’m sure he appreciates that!
Kelly @ Leafy Not Beefy says
Everything does look super good and super homemade. I’ve seen the Schwan truck drive by, but never tried them. I might have to check them out and see what they offer that’s vegetarian/vegan. 🙂
Erin says
I loved their veggie selection! It definitely made me feel like they could fit into a vegetarian lifestyle diet!

Never ordered from Schwan’s but I have ordered HORIZON FOODS before when I was little – my family LIVED OFF OF IT, lobster tails, tuna, mini pizzas, mozzerella sticks, rabbit, etc… SOOOO much to choose for and soooo easy to make, I kind of MISS IT 🙂 Memories!
Erin says
I love childhood memories! I’m excited for years in the future to get to make those memories all over again with my kids. 😀

We used to get Schwan’s when I was a kid. Mostly it was just ice cream so we learned to get very excited when “The Schwan Man” came around. The Orange push ups were awesome!

Debbie @ Live from La Quinta says
It’s nice to know that they have healthy options. I always thought of Schwann’s as meat delivery. I’m interested to learn more.
Erin says
Yeah I was surprised and happy at all the options for vegetarians!
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
They do look good, but I guess my concern is why the additives at all? The ingredient list for the vegetable blend is super long. And sweet potatoes are delicious by themselves – why the need to add evaporated cane juice (sugar) and a bunch of other things, even in tiny amounts?
I don’t mean to be a negative nancy, so forgive me 🙂 I just get frustrated when healthy only concerns calories and fat, without taking a look at ingredients.
Erin says
No you’re not being a negative nancy! Everyone has different things that are important to them. When I make sweet potatoes at home, I love slicing up sweet potatoes and putting just a bit of olive oil and sea salt, nothing else. However when I am rushed and run to Wegmans to pick up sweet potatoes they put some brown sugar in them. They’re not how I would make them at home but they’re quick and convenient and delicious and overall still healthy to me. The healthiest way to have vegetables is to slice them yourself and make them. But when I don’t have time or wan’t something super easy, I still think I’m eating healthy if I’m getting a little sugar or something else with my veggies. It’s just a personal belief for me.
Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food says
My parents used to always get food from Schwans and they always liked everything they tried! It’s nice to see healthy options and resealable bags is always a plus!!
Erin says
Yes, apparently they’re a family tradition for a lot of people! My dad said he always grew up seeing the Schwan’s trucks.
Melanie @ Nutritious Eats says

Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
I got my food from Schawan’s last night! I didn’t get any ice cream or cookies with my delivery, but I gave up dessert for Lent anyway, so I suppose it’s for the best :).
Erin says
I can’t wait to read your review!
Clara says
Tortellini were my absolute favorites when I was little (they still are actually!!!) Now that I have discovered my love for sweet potatoes and other veggies I think it would be the perfect meal!!!! And you’re so right about resealable bags vs. … not resealable ones. 😀
Erin says
I love all Italian food! haha I used to always wish I was Italian. ;p
Anthony says
It sounds like a good thing with name alone “Live Smart” however this isn’t healthy food. There’s too much sodium. If something has more mg/salt than calories it’s advised to stay away from it. Schwan’s is only trying to sucker the health conscious crowd in with food touted as good for you, but really isn’t.
Erin says
Thanks for your opinion. You really have to look at the daily percentage of sodium that’s in it. If you have a meal with more sodium in it, it really doesn’t matter if your other meals for the day then have less. It’s all about equalling out, not one specific meal. I myself almost never reach my daily sodium because so many of my meals are green smoothies, oatmeal, and eggs on toast. You have to do what’s best for you. 🙂
