3-Step Bedroom Upgrade

February 16, 2016 27 Comments

It’s crazy to me to realize that Josh and I have been living in our apartment now for almost three years! Time has flown and we have truly come to make it feel like home.

We’re still a few years away from owning a house. Originally that made it difficult for us to decide what to spend money on in our apartment, since we knew it wasn’t ours forever. We finally feel like we’ve achieved a balance where we’re spending on some things we know we’ll really enjoy now or that we’ll want to keep in our future house as well, and then saving on the rest.

We’ve been applying this process throughout our house and are slowly but surely making our way throughout all our rooms. We’ve recently tackled our bedroom and I’m excited to share our progress with you. We’re not interior designers, and this room is by no means finished, but we’re figuring out our style together and having a lot of fun in the process.

3-Step Bedroom Upgrade

If you’re looking for quick and easy changes you can make to your bedroom to have a big impact, this 3-Step Bedroom Upgrade is for you!

Headboard c/o

1. Get a headboard

Wow, Josh and I have never had a headboard before and it makes SUCH a difference!! Now that we have one, I’d describe a headboard as the wrapping paper on a present. It doesn’t really serve a purpose, but it ties the whole room together. I’d argue that if you can only make one change to your bedroom, a new headboard will have the biggest visual impact. Our new headboard is from DEQOR. I love how beautiful it is, the fact that it’s well-made, and is also super affordable!

Bedskirt

2. Add a bedskirt

I do not know how some people do not use bedskirts. They add a finished element to your bedding set and hide whatever random assortment of stuff you’re storing under your bed! I recommend getting one that is opaque and just skims the floor. While bedskirts run the gamut in price points, I prefer to get a cheaper bedskirt and invest the money I save into other bedroom pieces. Our bedskirt is less than $25.

3. Invest in quality bedding and linens

You sleep on your bed every night. I believe the sheets, the pillows, the blankets, and the bed should be comfortable and conducive to good sleep. While quality bedding and linens don’t necessarily look a whole lot different when upgrading your bedroom, they will definitely upgrade how you feel in your bedroom.

DEQOR recently sent me these  beautiful sheets and I love how they add a fun pop of color to the room. Can you tell I’m obsessed with teal? I want to sleep on fabrics that are smooth and won’t itch, scratch, or irritate my skin. These sheets are made of 100% organic cotton sateen and feel fabulous!

I’ve also been in the market for new pillows. The cheap, crappy ones I’ve been using have been leading to me using my penguin stuffed animal as a pillow. (No joke.) I figured this probably explained the sore neck I’ve been waking up with some mornings and I began my search for good quality pillows that would support my neck and back throughout the night. Let me tell you guys, memory foam pillows are where it’s at! I can notice such a difference in how my head rests on the pillow, how the pillow feels, and how I wake up in the morning. It’s incredible!

And there you have it, my three quick and easy tips for a bedroom upgrade! This post was not sponsored, but I did receive some items from DEQOR that are featured in my bedroom. If you’ve never heard of DEQOR before, you’re not alone. I hadn’t heard of them until they reached out to me via email! Now that I’ve thoroughly explored their website and worked with them I can say I’m a huge fan!

In a nutshell, DEQOR is a new online retailer with a fresh approach for helping people shop for home furnishings. Their customer service and concierge team is made up of interior designers that are available to help you with design advice and product questions while you upgrade your own room. One of the things I love most about DEQOR is that their line is pretty extensive, with an assortment of products curated for quality and always well-priced.

My next project to tackle in our bedroom is figuring out what to put above our bed. I currently have two paintings Josh and I painted at a couple’s art and wine class from when we first moved to Omaha. While it brings back a sweet memory, my art skills are not the greatest and I think we can use the space better. I think that will be a perfect opportunity to reach out to DEQOR’s designers and get some advice about what to do!

I love the headboard and the colors you chose for your sheets! We have a headboard and I think it makes such a difference from taking the bed up to the next level. I have never heard of DEQOR before but I will have to check them out!

I want a headboard so badly, but my bedroom has slanted ceilings, which makes height a problem. My bedroom is sadly still a mix of lived in and yet to unpack. The problem with low storage, I suppose.

But your bedroom is beautiful. I love those paintings! Did you do those, yourself?

Is the headboard mounted to the wall or attached to a standard bed frame? I’ve been looking for one in that style (though my husband isn’t yet on board ;)) but because we rent, too, I need it to attach to our metal frame & not the wall. I did check out their website, but it’s very… nondescript.

Hey Kristy! It’s attached to our bed frame. I was shocked my husband was on board as I think it’s a little feminine but I’m not complaining!! Haha

Awesome, thank you! Our styles are so different, but at that price, it’s worth mentioning again!

One of the best things we invested in, about 3 years into marriage, was a really nice bed. King size (my husband is 6’6″!), and some fancy sheets. These are the most amazing sheets I’ve ever had, seriously the softest ever and you can’t beat the price: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00902X2C2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

Also! I always say that we won’t be real adults until we have a headboard. Hopefully 2016 is the year for us to enter adulthood, :). I love the way you did yours!!

Great tips! We also have a couple of those wine-and-paint party paintings and they have eventually made their way to the den in the basement. 🙂 The room has a lovely welcoming vibe!

Love these tips! We have the same colors in our bedroom. The bedskirt definitely helps make a bedroom feel put together! We don’t have a headboard yet though. I haven’t been able to decide on one. I need to finish redoing the bathroom, then our bedroom is next on the list for some updating!

I want a headboard (like yours) SO BAD! That’s definitely going to be the next purchase for my bedroom. I have a new mattress and bedskirt, but I really want to get a headboard as I just feel like it makes my space seem a bit more “grown up.” After that it will be a new comforter…or I decide to actually use the quilt my grandmother made me for my 16th birthday, instead of feeling like I need to hide it away and protect it (yet never see it). 😉
