Tax time! I've been slowly but surely making a list of all the documents and receipts I needed to round up so Josh and I could sit down and tackle our taxes. I'd much rather get them done early than rush at the last minute and worry about making a mistake or having to pay a fee. Taxes one of the few things I don't procrastinate on. ;)
This year is also the first year everyone has to report their health insurance status on their taxes (My dad went almost 15 years without health insurance. I hope now that no one else ever has to do the same). I figured this tax update was an important thing to share since 48% of Americans don't know they have to report their 2014 health insurance status on their taxes. Tax changes generally lead to confusion and worry, at least for me.
Thank goodness for TurboTax. Josh and I have been using it to do our taxes for years and love how easily it walks us through all of the different tax sections. I've worked since I was 14, so I've had a lot of years filing taxes. The first (and last) time I tried to manually do my own taxes I calculated I owed $1,000 back to the government. I had a breakdown in my kitchen. My dad smartly recommended I get a second opinion. Using TurboTax, a friend was able to help me see that I was actually supposed to get money back from the government, not owe it.
This new healthcare tax change turned out to be no big deal for us since we both have healthcare coverage through work. We were able to check a few boxes and get back to the rest of our taxes. If you don't have health insurance yet you can still purchase it through open enrollment before Sunday, February 15th to avoid paying a penalty on your taxes next year.
I'm glad TurboTax made the healthcare section so easy for us. No one wants to spend any more time on their taxes than they have to. You can check out TurboTaxHealth.com to learn more about your health insurance and taxes, including finding out if you’re exempt from the tax penalty.
And if you're one of the lucky ones who can get all your taxes filed with a 1040A/EZ form you definitely want to head over to TurboTax.com. You can use their software until Monday, February 16th to file absolutely free!
If you have more complicated taxes like I do I definitely recommend TurboTax. They help me sort out the confusion that is full time jobs, consulting jobs, and blog work. I truly would not be able to do it by myself.

Questions of the Day: Do you have complicated taxes? Do you use TurboTax? Any fun plans for how you're going to use your refund? Josh and I are being responsible and putting it towards his student loans.
